What is YEL insurance?

The YEL insurance is compulsory for self-employed persons, as it is the basis of their pension and social security. YEL insurance is the most important of all insurance policies for the self-employed.

Who needs YEL insurance?

Take out YEL insurance when:

  • you are at 18-67 years old
  • Submit have been self-employed for at least four consecutive months
  • Your YEL income is at least EUR 9 010,28 per year in 2024
  • you work at in your company
  • live In Finland

You should take out YEL insurance immediately, but no later than six months after starting your business.

What is YEL income?

YEL income is the monetary value of your contribution. It is not your taxable income, the salary you pay yourself or the profit or sales of your business. When you estimate your YEL income, think of it like this: how much would you pay a person as skilled as you are for a year’s salary?

Your earned income affects the amount of your YEL contribution and the amount of your pension. Your earned income is also used to calculate the daily allowances paid by Kela, such as sickness and parental allowance. It also determines the level of your unemployment benefit and the level of your voluntary accident insurance. So there are many important factors that affect your income, so it is important to be accurate when estimating it.
